How to Sew an Apron the Easy Way!

Sewing an Apron

Not only does a hand-sewn apron help to keep your clothes safe from cooking-related accidents and splatters, it can also look incredibly stylish and, if trendy enough, provide you with the inspiration that you need to actually do some cooking in the first place! So, get your sewing machine ready – this is how to sew an apron the easy way!

Step 1

Grab an old apron and use it to trace the correct shape onto the fabric of your choice. Once you have cut out the shape, you’ll need to start by finishing off the edges. The easiest way in which to do this is to fold the edges inwards, press and fold again before stitching.

Step 2

Most aprons will have a pocket included in their design, which can come in handy. Make yours by simply cutting the shape that you want out of any fabric and pressing the top edge under by a half inch, folding in again another inch and stitching across the top of the pocket.  Also, press the other edges in by a half inch. Finally, you will need to stitch around the sides to secure the pocket. Make sure that it stays put by doing at least two rows of stitching.

Step 3

Next, you will need to create a neckband for the apron. We recommend using a stretchy material so that you won’t have to physically tie it around your neck. Stitch the edges of the neckband onto the apron in the same way that you secured the apron pocket.

Step 4

Lastly, you will have to create your waist ties. Don’t forget to use a few rows of stitching to make sure that you have a lasting hold. Remember, make sure that the ties are long enough!

It goes without saying that making an apron from scratch is one of the most enjoyable sewing projects there is. Luckily, as long as you have a quality sewing machine, it won’t be much of a challenge or take too much time out of your day.

Basic Sewing Machine Maintenance Tips

Affordable sewing machine

When it comes to sewing, aside from skill, the final product is often a reflection of the quality of the equipment that you have used to produce it! With this in mind, it becomes obvious just how important regular sewing machine maintenance is. Even an affordable sewing machine can work wonders if it is treated with the right level of care, consistently. Here are our top sewing machine maintenance tips to remember when it comes to looking after and preserving your precious sewing equipment.

Invest in Good Quality Thread and Needles

Did you know that low-quality thread, especially thread that has been glazed or waxed, can take a toll on affordable sewing machines? The brand of needles and thread that you choose to use can also make all of the difference. Mettler and Gutermann, for example, are both great options.

Clean the Machine Regularly

Over time, dust bunnies, lint and thread bits can accumulate within the machine, causing it to stop functioning optimally. The good news is that a decent clean, with the help of a nylon brush, can get things back to normal working order in a flash. Just remember to avoid cleaning the machine with canned air as this can clog it up as a result of increased moisture.

Keep Things Oiled

A generous helping of oil will assist in maintaining your sewing machine’s moving parts, allowing them to run more smoothly and for longer periods. The best time to apply a few drops of oil is after a really good clean. Don’t forget to buy the quality clear oil in order to ensure the desired results.
